BEST Nursery & Extended Services (Langford)
BEST Nursery is a friendly pre-school and day-care setting positioned in a village location, settled in the grounds of Langford Village Academy.
In April 2021, the setting opened its doors under the name of BEST Nursery & Extended Services (Langford), building on its success as a wraparound care provider within the school community, to deliver a wider range of services, including pre-school/childcare, and wraparound care.
The superb building that is home to the nursery was completed in Spring 2021. The design, layout and facilities are all bespoke to the nursery’s particular needs and wishes. It was designed primarily for children in order that the children’s physical and environmental needs were not only met but exceeded. The nursery’s resources were expertly chosen to provide children with unique and rich experiences.
We offer a safe, caring and stimulating environment and a first class early years education for children from 2 years old to 5 years old during term time, and the offer of full day care. This is further enhanced by our wraparound care service which provides care before and after school for children attending Langford Village Academy. We have a bespoke enclosed play area where we strive to reflect all learning areas. We also have access to the academy playing field, and the meadow area. Older children in WAC Club are also able to access the amazing Trim Trail facilities on the playing field. This amazing environment lends itself to child directed play where children can flourish.
Wraparound Care
We provide before and after school care for children attending the school, in a relaxed and child-led environment. Children are encouraged to choose and discuss what activities they may like to do. The idea of involving the children in decision making is so that they are taking or making ownership of their club. Even the principles or boundaries are discussed and set at what they understand and how they want to be respected. We have found that children become particularly engaged in the activities when they have chosen them. The children have many toys and craft materials available to them but we always welcome junk modelling items, material, or anything else that can be recycled.
Playwork
Here at Langford we are passionate about play. Our setting supports the children attending WAC Club and holiday club through Playwork. This is a process which focuses on children's activities outside of the school environment, facilitating and promoting children's right to play and enriching their play environment. The play cycle has no outcome and aims to allow children to take control of their play.
The children's needs are at the centre of what our practitioners do, where we strongly believe that children are the experts when it comes to play!
Playwork is guided by the following Playwork Principles:
- All children and young people need to play. The impulse to play is innate. Play is a biological, psychological and social necessity, and is fundamental to the healthy development and well-being of individuals and communities.
- Play is a process that is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated. That is, children and young people determine and control the content and intent of their play, by following their own instincts, ideas and interests, in their own way for their own reasons.
- The prime focus and essence of playwork is to support and facilitate the play process and this should inform the development of play policy, strategy, training and education.
- For playworkers, the play process takes precedence and playworkers act as advocates for play when engaging with adult-led agendas.
- The role of the playworker is to support all children and young people in the creation of a space in which they can play.
- The playworker’s response to children and young people playing is based on a sound up to date knowledge of the play process, and reflective practice.
- Playworkers recognise their own impact on the play space and also the impact of children and young people’s play on the playworker.
- Playworkers choose an intervention style that enables children and young people to extend their play. All playworker intervention must balance risk with the developmental benefit and well-being of children.
